What You Need To Know

A look at how preventive screenings protect your foot and ankle health over time.

Preventive Screenings for Your Feet

Preventive foot care screenings are routine examinations designed to assess the health of your feet and ankles before small issues become serious problems. At Bay Area Foot Care, screenings may include nerve and neurological sensory testing, vascular and circulation testing, and diagnostic ultrasound to evaluate the structures and function of your lower extremities.

These screenings are important because many foot conditions develop quietly. A soft tissue mass, for example, can manifest as a lump, a bump or a nodule, as a tumor, or as a localized area of swelling. It is quite common in the legs. Depending on the underlying cause, masses can be single or appear as multiple clusters, round or elliptic, soft or firm, painful or painless, and may enlarge over time or remain static.

You should see a podiatrist if a lump causes discomfort, is oozing, enlarges rapidly, is red and inflamed, causes fever, appears alongside lumps elsewhere on the body, causes muscle weakness or weight loss, is surrounded by lesions, is painful to the touch, or has not subsided for over a month.

Often, these masses are painless and non-symptomatic, hence people think that they are not harmful. But it is better to get it evaluated by a specialist to rule out any infection or malignancy. A preventive screening gives our team the chance to examine your feet, answer your questions, and recommend next steps if anything needs closer attention.

Why Early Detection Matters

Soft tissue tumors or masses are a common occurrence on the leg and feet, but early diagnosis is important. A soft tissue mass can be due to a wide range of conditions, some non-threatening and some serious. If it is a serious condition, the faster it is assessed and diagnosed, and the sooner treatment is given, the better the outcomes.

Leg lumps can be caused by any number of conditions. Infections such as abscesses, boils, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, and papillomavirus infections may produce a lump with inflammation, pain, and possible pus discharge. Inflammatory conditions like erythema nodosum, gout, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis can also produce lumps around joints.

Trauma is another common cause. Injuries of the foot and ankle that cause internal trauma and inflammation can manifest as a lump, including broken bones, hematomas, and sting or bite injuries. Both benign and malignant tumors can also cause lumps, including fibromas, lipomas, melanoma, nevi, and sarcomas.

If left untreated, complications can include disability, joint deformity, nerve problems, chronic pain, and the spread of cancer or infection. If you detect a soft tissue mass in the feet, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic, see a podiatrist and get it assessed so any concerns can be addressed early.
